A comprehensive paintbrush care & cleaning guide!

While Painting

⚡️ These are key practices to avoid brush fraying and muddying up paints!

1. Use a container with a built-in brush washer for cleaning your brushes while painting

2. Avoid leaving brushes submerged in water or solvent–this causes brush hairs to swell-up and fray, damages the ferrule and glue binding the brush together and can lead to misshaping when hairs are pressed against a surface for too long.

• Keep brushes within reach and in a protective position when painting.

• Clean & lightly dry off brushes before resting them on the rack.

3. Use multiple washing containers to avoid muddying up your painting and color mixes by:

• Separating clean and dirty water

• Separating light colours (especially white) from darker colours

4. Keep certain brushes for use with exclusive colours to prevent color tainting. For example:

• Keep brushes to use exclusively for white or yellows

After Painting

⚡️ These are two very important steps as paint residue that dries and accumulates at the base of the brush quickly leads to hardening and fraying of the brush hairs! 

1. Use a brush cleaning plate as a final step to deep clean into the base and ferrule of brushes to dissolve stubborn paint residue and ensure no paint gets left behind!

• Use this cleaning plate with large brushes and heavy body paints like acrylics & oils.

• Ceramic Deep Brush Cleaning Plate

• Use this cleaning plate with small-medium brushes and low-viscosity paints like watercolor, ink, gouache and tempera.

💡 Tip: Clean your brushes with these cleaners until there is no more visible paint residue in your water or solvent!

2. Suspend your brushes with the hairs pointing down–NEVER with hairs pointing up. This prevents water and paint residue from accumulating at the base and into the ferrule of the brush where it will harden and dissolve the glue binding the hairs leading to hair fallout and your brush detaching at the ferrule.

Paintbrush Storage

⚡️Brushes must be stored in a way that protects their shape and hairs 

1. Store your brushes in a sleeve for a compact option that is especially necessary when transporting brushes
